Legacy system

Legacy is Forever’s account-wide progression layer. You earn points once per Battle.net account by doing things you were going to do anyway (level a class, max a profession, clear a raid) and every non-Hardcore character spends the shared pool in its own copy of three small perk trees. It is the only system in Forever that rewards playing an alt, and it is deliberately capped so nobody has to. For a friends-and-family guild, the two questions that matter are which perks to buy with 16 points and who takes which tree.

Blizzard’s own description: “Players earn Legacy Points by completing Legacy Challenges across several categories, with examples including leveling a specific class or reaching a particular skill milestone.” “At launch, each character can spend up to 16 points in their Legacy Trees.” “Players can still continue completing challenges beyond that spending limit and earn up to 65 Legacy Points at the start.” “Legacy Points are shared across all alts, while each character spends those points separately in their own trees.” verified

Three rules to remember:

  1. Points are earned once per account. A second Warrior to 60 gives nothing. verified
  2. Points are spent per character. Your Mage and your Priest each pick their own 16 from the same pool. verified
  3. The reward track counts points earned, not spent. The 16 cap does not gate the mount. verified

Blizzard’s stated reasons for the cap: new players never fall far behind, and alts are optional because one character alone can earn 3 (leveling) + up to 6 (two tradeskills) + 12 (PvP) + 2 (Adventure) + 6 (dungeons and raids) = 29 points, well past 16. verified

Blizzard’s Legacy post and two beta-client readings (classicwowforever.com, wowforeverbuilds.com) agree on the totals. The per-challenge detail comes from the beta client and can change. verified totals unverified detail

Category Points How you earn them
Classes 27 Reach level 25 (Novice), 45 (Experienced), and 60 (Master) on each of the 9 classes. 3 per class
Tradeskills 18 Reach 150, 225, and 300 skill in each of the 6 crafting professions (Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Enchanting, Engineering, Leatherworking, Tailoring). Gathering and secondary professions give none
Player vs Player 12 Honor ranks 3, 7, 10, 13, 14 (5 points), Exalted with 4 battleground factions (4 points), Field of Honor weeks 4, 7, 10 (3 points)
Dungeons 3 Novice, Experienced, and Master Spelunker: defeat final bosses in sets of 2, 3, and 3 dungeons across three level brackets. Which dungeons is not listed
Raids 3 Defeat the end bosses of The Barrow Deeps, Hyjal Summit, and Onyxia’s Lair
Adventure 2 Explore the entire world map; complete the Lord Valthalak questline

Two things fall out of that table. First, the PvP category is the single biggest pile a non-alt player can reach (12 points), and it needs a Field of Honor season to exist, so nobody caps from PvP in week one. Second, the “4 battleground factions” line means a fourth battleground reputation exists beyond Warsong Gulch, Arathi Basin, and Alterac Valley. Darkspear Islands is the obvious candidate. See Endgame PvP. unverified

For a casual player with one character: 3 (one class to 60) + up to 6 (two crafts to 300) + 2 to 3 (dungeon sets) + 1 (exploration) = roughly 12 to 13 points. The 16 cap only binds for people who level alts or grind PvP rank. Raids open 2026-12-09, so the 3 raid points arrive after that. See Raids overview.

Every character has its own copy of the three trees. Gates work two ways: some perks need 5 or 10 points already spent in the same tree, and some need a specific neighbor perk first. Six slots across the trees read “not yet implemented” in the beta client. The names below match Blizzard’s Legacy post; the rank counts, values, and gates come from beta-client readings (classicwowforever.com, zockify.com) and are subject to tuning. verified names unverified values

Perk Ranks Effect at max rank Gate
Working Overtime 5 +20% chance to skill up any primary, secondary, or class tradeskill open
Bountiful Harvest 5 +100% “Scarce” materials from Mining, Herbalism, Skinning (Scarce is a new rarity flag on gathering drops) open
Master Chef 5 50% chance Cooking makes an extra item 5 points in tree
Bartering 2 Vendor items cost 10% less 5 points in tree
Performance Bonus 3 15% chance a crate hand-in gives double Merchant’s Favor 5 points + Bountiful Harvest
Luremaster 2 50% chance of an extra fish while a lure is active 5 points in tree
Dedicated Study 1 25 sec cast, 23 h cooldown: +1 skill to your lowest tradeskill, or 2 to 4 random Elemental Essence if everything is maxed 10 points + Bartering

Blizzard’s post calls Performance Bonus simply “Performance.” Same perk. Whether Bartering’s discount applies to riding trainers is unknown. See Professions overview for Merchant’s Favor and the Scarce flag.

Cosmetic only, unlocked by total points earned across the account, not gated by the 16 spending cap. Blizzard: rewards are “special cosmetic or prestige rewards, such as the Spectral Bear Cub, without providing a competitive gameplay advantage.” Four rewards at launch, more promised with each content update. verified

Total points earned Reward
15 (zockify says 10) Replica Ironforge Air Rifle (toy)
25 Spectral Bear Cub (pet)
40 Spectral Bear Tabard
55 Reins of the Spectral Bear (mount)

Thresholds are from beta-client readings with one conflict on the first step. unverified

Blizzard’s Legacy post does not address resetting points. Wowhead’s Legacy article, read through a proxy, says you “can unlearn your Legacy Tree talent points at a class trainer for 10” gold per point. An earlier beta report (allthings.how) said 10 gold flat. Treat it as “10 gold, per point or flat unknown, at a class trainer.” unverified

Practical consequence: with a 16-point cap, a full respec costs at most 160 gold on the per-point reading, or 10 gold on the flat reading. Either way it is cheaper than a talent respec chain, so buying leveling perks first and swapping to raid perks at 60 is a sane plan.

  • Non-Hardcore challenges do not count inside Hardcore. Hardcore completions do count everywhere else. verified
  • Blizzard will add 12 Hardcore-specific challenges when Hardcore ships (post-launch, no date). verified
  • PvP challenges are unavailable in Hardcore. verified

See Rulesets for how the Hardcore wall works.

Points are per character, so spend by role, not by guild. These are recommendations built from the perk values above; every number is beta data. unverified

Crafter or gatherer main (16 points): Working Overtime 5 first (it saves the most materials over 1 to 300 and works on First Aid and Cooking), then Bountiful Harvest 5 if you gather, then Bartering 2 (10% off threads, vials, spices, and every vendor item is real gold at launch), then Dedicated Study 1 once you have 10 in the tree. That is 5 + 5 + 2 + 1 = 13, with 3 spare for Master Chef or Luremaster.

Raider who does not craft: Reinforce 5 (wipes cost less), Gourmand 3, then Permanence 2 (Fortitude, Mark of the Wild, Arcane Intellect, and camp buffs last twice as long), then Reagent Economy 1 at 10 points. That is 11, leaving 5 for Diplomat.

Leveler on launch night: Well Rested 5, then Talented 5 (first talent at level 5), then Thrill of Adventure. Frequent Flier needs 10 in the tree plus Field Guide; do not buy it before you can afford the gate. Riding at 40 matters more than a flight discount.

Guild-level plan: the perks that help a group are Field Guide and Permanence (camp buffs) and Bountiful Harvest (materials for the guild crafters). Make sure the designated gatherers take Bountiful Harvest and the designated cook takes Master Chef. See Camping and the profession supply chain.
