Hardcore ruleset

Hardcore is the fourth Forever ruleset and the only one not available on 2026-11-04. Blizzard has confirmed the shape (one life, a closed population, a one-way exit to the other rulesets on death) and nothing else. Anyone in the guild who wants to play Hardcore is choosing a separate character on a separate population that cannot group with the guild’s Normal, PvP or RP characters. This page is short because the rulebook is.

Blizzard’s Deep Dive recap: Hardcore is “Available after launch for players seeking the ultimate challenge, where every decision matters and death carries lasting consequences.” The What’s Next recap lists it under “Future” with no slot. lfcarry attributes “we won’t have it at launch, but soon” to Blizzard. verified for the Blizzard text, unverified for the lfcarry quote.

Fan sites say “winter” or “early 2027”. unverified The published roadmap through Summer 2027 does not list a Hardcore date. verified

  • Whether the death transfer is mandatory or optional, and whether it is free. wowsod flags this as open. unverified
  • Whether names, bags, gold and gear survive the transfer.
  • Buff rules, auction house rules, mail rules.
  • Whether Classic Hardcore’s “no dungeon re-entry” style restrictions apply.
  • Addon policy on Hardcore.
  • Whether a Hardcore character that reaches 60 and stays alive can ever leave voluntarily.
  • Hardcore is a separate character on a separate population. It cannot play with the guild’s Normal, PvP or RP characters.
  • The one-way exit means a dead Hardcore character can join the guild’s ruleset afterwards, keeping whatever the transfer keeps. It is the only ruleset-to-ruleset movement Forever has announced; there is no transfer between the live rulesets. Developer Nora Mills in the 09-17 Q&A: “without a character transfer, you’re not just going to be able to flip flop.” unverified quote via wowsod.
  • Legacy earned on a Hardcore run does benefit your guild character. A Hardcore alt is a legitimate way to farm account-wide perks once it exists.
  • The launch-night playbook assumes the guild votes Normal, PvP or RP. Hardcore is not a launch option and should not be on the ballot.
  • Release date.
  • The full rulebook: transfer mechanics, what survives death, buff and AH rules, dungeon rules, addon policy.
  • Whether Hardcore gets its own leveling tuning or uses the Normal tuning.
