Design philosophy
Blizzard has said a lot about what Forever is for, and most of it is consistent: a permanent year-one Azeroth where the world is the main character, the journey outranks the destination, convenience is treated as a cost, and the game should play fine with no addons. Knowing the stated philosophy helps the guild predict what Blizzard will and will not add (no flying, no scaling, no Token, no shared tagging) and where the friction will be (addons, respec cost, layering). Below, every quote is tagged by who said it and whether we loaded the source. verified
Who said what
Section titled “Who said what”Speakers across the BlizzCon material: Holly Longdale (Executive Producer), Ion Hazzikostas, Johanna Faries (Blizzard President), Tim Jones (Lead Designer), Nora Mills (Engineer), Josh Greenfield (Senior Game Designer), Clay Stone (Associate Production Director), Ana Resendez (Lead Software Engineer), Kris Zierhut (Principal Game Designer), Matthew Armstrong (World Builder), Tom Ellis (Senior Game Producer), Mike Nuthals. Blizzard’s written recaps attribute panelists but not individual lines, so recap language below is “Blizzard” rather than a name. verified roster

| Quote | Where |
|---|---|
| “Azeroth is calling once more. World of Warcraft: Forever invites you to begin again in a reimagined original Azeroth.” | Pre-purchase post (24301508) |
| “The world takes center stage, community comes first, and the journey matters as much as the destination.” | Announcement (24302093) |
| “The journey matters as much as the destination, and the world is ready to grow for years to come.” | Beta post |
| Four pillars: “approachable and familiar, the world as the main character, the journey before the destination, and protecting social experiences.” | What’s Next recap |
| Combat: “preserve what makes it deliberate, tactical, and class-driven”; a solo kill should take “10 to 15 seconds”; damage dealers “still need to respect Threat, focus targets carefully, and use area damage only when it is safe.” | Deep Dive recap |
| Talents: “three talent trees all available at once”; all 27 trees viable in dungeons and raids. | Deep Dive recap |
| Legacy: built so “new players can catch up” and “alts are optional.” | Legacy post |
| Rewards on the Legacy track are “special cosmetic or prestige rewards, such as the Spectral Bear Cub, without providing a competitive gameplay advantage.” | Deep Dive recap |
| Camping: “Choose your campsite carefully, though, some parts of Azeroth are better suited for a quiet rest than others.” | Deep Dive recap |
| Weapon skill: “Items with weapon skill offer less of it per item.” | Deep Dive recap |

Mike Nuthals
- “players will not have access to those kind of computational add-ons”; no one-button rotations. (Kotaku) verified

Matthew Armstrong, World Builder, X thread reported by GamesRadar and PC Gamer on September 23 (wowforeverbuilds relay, loaded):
- “I am making WoW: Forever for the Classic gamer and for the millions of people who have had their accounts lapse over the years because they were not satisfied with changes that were made to the game.”
- Three guiding beliefs: “Convenience is the death of the journey.” “If you’re making a game for everyone then you’re making it for no one.” “Every change we make incurs a debt to the authenticity of the game, and sooner or later that debt will be paid.”
Blizzard on progression (wowsod.pro attribution)
- “You get better at the game by playing the game,” with no Token or boosts.
Tom Ellis, Senior Game Producer, beta post-mortem (masterofwarcraft relay of a forum post we could not locate):
- The team had “never encountered that particular failure without the usual obvious CPU warning signs” in 22 years. Three bottlenecks named: Battle.net metering misfiring on two regional connections (expanded to eight), Oracle database statistics going stale under new insert patterns, and empty map instances not shutting down.
The philosophy as a list of decisions
Section titled “The philosophy as a list of decisions”What the stated philosophy has already produced, so the guild can predict the rest:
| Decision | Pillar it serves | Source |
|---|---|---|
| No flying, no level scaling | The world as the main character | verified |
| Level cap 60 indefinitely, no expansion | The journey before the destination | verified |
| Contested mob tagging stays | Serendipitous interactions | unverified |
| Camping as a shared buff station | Protecting social experiences | verified |
| Realmless with guild-layer placement | Protecting social experiences | verified |
| Legacy capped at 16, alts optional | Approachable and familiar | verified |
| Unified hit and crit, healers do damage | Approachable and familiar | verified |
| Addon disarmament, built-in meter | “Plays fine without addons” | verified |
| No Token, no boosts, GDKP banned | “You get better at the game by playing the game” | unverified, press only |
| Transmog opt-in, Classic preset | Authenticity debt | verified |
| Cosmetic-only items kept rare | Authenticity debt | verified |
The tension to watch: Armstrong’s “convenience is the death of the journey” sits next to transmog, HD models, gamepad, built-in meters, surnames, combined bags, and quest markers. Blizzard’s answer is that each of those is a toggle or a preset. How far that holds is the community’s biggest argument; see Community sentiment.
