Forever landed to a mostly warm reception with one loud exception (the $29.99 elf) and one slow-burning one (the addon disarmament). The rest of the noise is beta noise: queues, layering jank, class bugs, respec cost. This page lists what is actually being said, roughly in order of volume, what Blizzard has answered, and which “sources” are making things up. Reddit could not be loaded, so nothing here is quantified. verified where tagged

GamesRadar’s headline: “a new race you can’t get without paying $30, and it’s not the first impression fans were hoping for: ‘They are just blue elves.’” unverified, body 403

The objections, as relayed by unboxedreviews and masterofwarcraft: unverified

  • A subscription MMO charging for a race sets a precedent for future paid content.
  • “Why another elf” when High Elves or Ogres would fit a “return to roots” better (an open letter cited by unboxedreviews).
  • Lead Designer Tim Jones’s “elf characters are extremely popular” answer made it worse for critics.
  • The druid forms and the blue skin variant have a “weird retail vibe.”

The defense: better an optional $30 than a box price for everyone. The base game is free with a subscription and no other content is paid. unverified

Blizzard’s response so far: lore (the Highborne exile story, Metzen’s encouragement) and popularity data (the Blood Elf effect). No price change. See Skyborne and Editions.

Blunt read: the race is fine, the price is the story, and the price is not moving. If a guild member’s objection is principle, the answer is not to buy it; nothing in the race is required to raid.

WeakAuras and Hekili gone, threat meters neutered, Classic addons need ports. Addon authors in beta found UnitHealth returns secret values. Blizzard’s answer is built-in tools and “a game that plays fine without addons at all.” verified

Expect this to be the biggest friction for returning raiders, and the most durable one, because Blizzard has said the restrictions stay synchronized with retail patch to patch. It is not a beta bug that gets fixed. See UI and addons policy and Addons that work.

September 17: long queues, disconnects, slow looting, emergency restarts. Senior Game Producer Tom Ellis published a post-mortem naming three bottlenecks: Battle.net metering misfiring on two regional connections (expanded to eight), Oracle database statistics going stale under new insert patterns (fixed with reanalysis and automated jobs), and empty map instances not shutting down (fixed, more WORLD servers added). He said the team had “never encountered that particular failure without the usual obvious CPU warning signs” in 22 years. unverified, masterofwarcraft relaying a forum post we could not locate

Community read: good that it broke in beta; worry that one ecosystem per ruleset means one giant queue on November 4. Since there is no realm to switch to, a queue is a queue for the whole ruleset in your region. See Rulesets and the queue contingency on Road to launch.

Multiple forum threads ask for cheaper respecs (20 gold cited as too much) and for dual spec. Zero blue responses. Beta observations: 1 gold then 5 gold at level 20. Client strings mention “a primary and a secondary talent spec, each marked active or locked,” with no cost or unlock level in the data. verified threads, no blue unverified client strings

Blunt read: dual spec is possible, unconfirmed, and nobody at Blizzard has said a word. Plan for vanilla respec economics (1 to 5 gold, then +5 per respec to a 50 gold cap, vanilla baseline) until told otherwise.

Auto-switching layers mid-fight and mid-conversation (“will refresh in 5 minutes”), quest mobs vanishing, people disappearing from chat, greyed-out invite buttons on fresh characters. Player reports, no blue reply. verified thread

The guild-layer placement rule is the workaround. See Rulesets.

Headlines from September 23 to 24: instant Auto Shot confirmed a bug with the 0.5 second wind-up returning; Paladin Consecration ticks dropping to 1 to 2 damage and losing threat; new spell ranks not auto-placing on bars; caster scaling arguments. unverified, wowforeverbuilds headlines

Blunt read: beta at level cap 20 to 30 tells you almost nothing about level 60 balance, and every sim and tier list published so far says so in its own fine print. Do not plan a roster around them. See the class pages.

Officially unsupported. Proton works with DX11 and Secondary Lighting on Fair. verified Relevant to at least one member of this guild.

World Builder Matthew Armstrong’s thread (“convenience is the death of the journey,” “every change we make incurs a debt to the authenticity of the game”) was received as reassurance by purists and as a warning by casuals. unverified relay

What Blizzard is keeping: contested mob tagging, no fast travel, no flying, no scaling, no Token, no boosts, GDKP banned. The counter-worry: transmog, HD models, gamepad, built-in meters, surnames, combined bags, and quest markers read as retail creep. The Classic preset exists precisely to defuse that, and every one of those is a toggle. See Design philosophy.

Turtle WoW, Stormforge, and Ascension were all shut down by Blizzard legal in 2026. Part of the audience sees Forever as the replacement they were promised; another part resents the timing and the paid race in that light. verified shutdowns

Consistently, across the press we could load:

  • The subscription-only model for the base game (no box price).
  • The Legacy cap design: no alt treadmill, alts optional.
  • The Riverglades “living in Azeroth, not saving it” tone.
  • The campfire idea as a social mechanic.
  • The honesty of the beta post-mortem.
  • Ten and twenty player raids every tier, so a small guild is a first-class citizen.
  • wowforeverguides.com. Its “Developer Q&A” writeup claims Molten Core opens December 9, that Hardcore has “Mak’gora duels with visible ear trophies,” and that “third-party damage meters and combat log parsers function reliably.” Every one of those contradicts Blizzard’s own posts or the beta findings. Vapor. verified page, judged unreliable
  • woweternity.com. “Forever Edition” addon downloads are fabricated. Never install addon packs from third-party sites. verified, addons baseline
  • lfcarry.com on the Collector’s Edition “limit 3”: the gear store says limit one per household. Otherwise a usable explainer. verified
  • Any “best race” or BiS list for level 60: beta caps at 30, so it is theorycraft. The honest ones (leprestore, MythicSim) say so in their own text. verified
  • warcraft.wiki.gg’s Forever overview on new combos (“Gnome Mages, Human Druids, Orc Hunters”): a summarizer error; the individual wiki pages are fine. verified

Reddit returned 403 or truncated pages, so there is no thread count, upvote ratio, or poll behind any “loud” above. Massively OP, MMO-Champion comment sections, and the GamesRadar and Windows Central bodies could not be loaded. Treat the ordering as an editorial read of headlines and forum threads, not data.

  • Any quantified sentiment (Reddit, polls, subscriber numbers).
  • Whether Blizzard will respond on respec cost, dual spec, or layering before launch.
  • Whether the Server Slam happens and how the queue looks under it.
  • Whether the beta class bugs (Auto Shot, Consecration) are fixed before October 21.
