Onyxia's Lair

Onyxia is the only 40-player raid at launch and the only launch raid with a vanilla ancestor. It is one boss in Dustwallow Marsh, no attunement expected, and Blizzard has said nothing about whether the encounter, loot or entry is changed. For a friends-and-family guild, the plan is to join or host a cross-guild 40 with simple loot rules, not to fill 40 from the roster.

Southern Dustwallow Marsh, in the Wyrmbog. Wowhead’s Forever DB has the zone at ID 2159 and notes the entrance “may have moved”. datamined

Getting there: Theramore (Alliance boat from Menethil Harbor) or Brackenwall Village (Horde). vanilla baseline Forever adds new ship routes: Stormwind Harbor to Auberdine, Menethil to Southshore to Auberdine, Tanaris to Powderfuse Port in the Riverglades. unverified None of the new routes obviously shorten the Dustwallow trip; check in-game.

The black dragon Onyxia, daughter of Deathwing, lairs in the swamp while meddling in the politics of Stormwind under a human guise. vanilla baseline Forever has not said whether the surrounding questlines (Marshal Windsor, the Stormwind throne room reveal, Rexxar’s chain for the Horde) are retained, reworked or removed.

Field Status
Size 40, confirmed by Tim Jones at the Sept 17 Q&A verified
Bosses One: Onyxia
Attunement Launch raids need none per the dev interview. verified The vanilla Drakefire Amulet chain (long Horde chain via Rexxar; Alliance via Marshal Windsor, the BRD jailbreak and UBRS) is presumed gone. Wowhead lists it “TBD in Forever (required in Classic)”. Expect no attunement, confirm at launch.
Lockout Unannounced. 5-day reset in vanilla. vanilla baseline
Legacy Two Legacy Challenges for defeating Onyxia, 1 point each datamined
Changes in Forever Unknown. Blizzard has not said whether the encounter, loot or entry is changed.

40-player raids are an exception in Forever’s design. “Players should not expect a 40-player raid in every tier.” verified

Everything in this section is 1.12 behavior. Whether any of it is retuned for Forever’s class kits is unknown. vanilla baseline

Phase Trigger What happens What to do
1: Ground Pull Cleave, Tail Sweep, Wing Buffet (threat drop), Flame Breath Tank her facing away from the raid; melee at the sides, never in front or behind; ranged spread
2: Air 65% She flies. Fireballs on random targets, whelps pour from both side caves, Deep Breath down a lane when she emotes Whelp off-tanks pick up each cave; everyone moves out of her line on the emote; healers spread
3: Landing 40% Lands. Bellowing Roar (raid-wide fear), Eruption cracks in the floor Fear Ward or Tremor Totem on the tanks; Free Action Potion pre-fear; move off glowing cracks

Standard vanilla assignments:

  • Main tank with fire resistance gear and a Greater Fire Protection Potion.
  • One or two whelp off-tanks.
  • Healers spread across the room so a Deep Breath does not delete them all.
  • Fear immunity on the main tank at phase 3 or she turns and breathes on the raid.

Vanilla Onyxia dropped the tier 2 helm for every class, weapons, and the Head of Onyxia quest turn-in that gave a city-wide buff. vanilla baseline

None of that is confirmed for Forever. Forever’s tier is “Season 1” with 2/3/4/5-piece bonuses and is tagged to Hyjal Summit in the files; whether Onyxia drops a tier slot is one of the open questions. The Head of Onyxia turn-in buff, if it exists, is a world buff, and world buffs reportedly do not work inside raids. unverified Do not plan the raid week around it.

Epic appearances go only to the looter. verified

Blizzard has not published a split. The guild default, built from vanilla:

Tanks Healers DPS Reasoning
4 10 26 MT plus whelp off-tanks plus backups; vanilla pugs ran 8 to 12 healers. A 40 exists here for one boss, so DPS-heavy is fine. vanilla baseline

Debuff limit was not answered at the Q&A. If 16 returns, Warlock and Shadow Priest debuff budgets matter at 40. See Raid composition.

Onyxia is likely an alliance-of-guilds or a pug. Options, in order of preference:

  1. Join a cross-guild 40 that already exists on the ruleset, with whatever loot rule the host uses.
  2. Host one with soft reserve plus MS>OS. One boss; keep it simple. See Loot systems and Loot rules.
  3. Do not try to fill 40 from the guild roster if it is a 10 or 20-sized guild. It costs a night and goodwill.
  • Main tank: fire resistance pieces and Greater Fire Protection Potions. Only the main tank. Nothing indicates FR sets are needed beyond that; do not farm them on speculation.
  • Free Action Potions for everyone for the phase 3 fear. vanilla baseline
  • Priest with Fear Ward or Shaman with Tremor Totem assigned to the tank group. Both factions have Paladins and Shamans now, so faction is not a blocker.
  • A Warlock and two helpers at the entrance for summons.
  • Confirm at launch whether any attunement quest exists. Do not send people into the BRD jailbreak on the assumption that it does.
  • Soft reserves declared in the Discord thread before pull if the guild hosts.
  • Whether the encounter, loot or entry is changed in Forever.
  • Whether the Drakefire Amulet chain exists as an optional quest.
  • Lockout (5-day vs 7-day vs something new).
  • Whether Onyxia drops a Season 1 tier slot.
  • Whether the Head of Onyxia turn-in and its buff exist, and whether that buff works in raids.
  • Whether the entrance moved and where.
