Shaman
The Shaman keeps its three vanilla trees, mail at 40, shields and totems, and every one of those trees was reworked. Totems now drop four at a time from a Totem Bar, last five minutes and reach 30 yards. Enhancement got Maelstrom Weapon and a capstone haste cooldown, Elemental got Lava Burst and Lightning Overload, Restoration got Riptide and Water Shield. Dwarves can roll it, which makes Shaman an Alliance class for the first time in a Classic-shaped game. It is the buff anchor for every melee group, and the class everyone keeps asking to tank with. The short answer to that is no, for now.
Why play it in Forever
Section titled “Why play it in Forever”Shaman is the melee group’s Windfury Totem and Strength of Earth Totem, an mp5 battery through Mana Spring, and the Horde’s answer to Blessing of Salvation problems via Tremor and Grounding. In Forever the totem tax is gone: one button drops four totems, Totemic Recall refunds 25% of their mana, and Totemic Projection moves them. verified Unified hit and crit plus the new Intellect-to-AP and Intellect-to-spell-power talents (Mental Dexterity, Mental Quickness) mean one mail set with Intellect and hit serves every spec. A Blizzard lead designer is quoted on 09-23 saying “all 27 talent trees are viable for all content”. verified secondhand
What changed from vanilla
Section titled “What changed from vanilla”foreverchanges (beta 1.60.1.69977) counts 12 new talents, 33 changed, 8 removed, 5 new spells, 1 renamed spell and 28 changed spells. verified
New talents with beta tooltips: verified
| Tree | Talent | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Elemental | Lightning Overload | Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning can repeat at half damage, no extra cost or threat. A fan “3% per rank” reading is unverified |
| Elemental | Earthbound (21 pt) | Earthbind Totem immobilizes for 5 sec on cast |
| Elemental | Lava Burst (31 pt) | 99 to 127 Fire at the datamined rank; +20% if your Flame Shock is on the target. NOT a guaranteed crit as in Wrath |
| Enhancement | Mental Dexterity | AP equal to 33% of Intellect at max rank. A fan guide says 100%; treat 33% as datamined |
| Enhancement | Shamanistic Focus (11 pt) | Shock and Lightning Shield cost minus 45% |
| Enhancement | Mental Quickness | Spell damage and healing +15% of Intellect |
| Enhancement | Improved Stormstrike | Mana regen while casting; dodges and parries can reset Stormstrike’s cooldown |
| Enhancement | Maelstrom Weapon | Melee hits stack up to 5 discounts on the next Lightning Bolt’s cast time and mana. “Instant and free” at 5 per expcarry |
| Enhancement | Rage of the Farseer (31 pt) | +30% melee attack speed and spell casting speed for 25 sec |
| Restoration | Mindfulness | 17% of mana regen continues while casting |
| Restoration | Water Shield (11 pt) | Three globes restore mana when hit or on critical heals, rate limited. “2% max mana per proc” is unverified |
| Restoration | Riptide (31 pt) | 456 to 504 direct plus 445 over 15 sec, and +25% Chain Heal effectiveness on that target |
Removed (8): Elemental Mastery, Enhancing Totems, Shield Specialization, Two-Handed Axes and Maces (two-handers are now baseline per zockify), Weapon Mastery, Improved Weapon Totems, Totemic Mastery, Nature’s Guidance. verified
Notable changed talents: verified
- Stormstrike moved from row 7 to row 4, no longer requires Elemental Weapons, and now “increases the Shaman’s next Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning or Earth Shock damage to that target by 20% for 12 sec” (expcarry: 8 sec cooldown, Nature damage).
- Mana Tide Totem moved from row 7 to row 4.
- Elemental Fury is 5 ranks at 20% per rank of crit damage bonus. Call of Thunder is a 1-rank talent at 3% crit.
- Anticipation is 3 ranks for 6% dodge. Toughness is Stamina (up to 10%), not armor. Spirit Weapons replaces Parry: grants parry and modifies threat depending on Rockbiter (a “+/-30%” figure is unverified).
- Improved Ghost Wolf: instant and usable indoors. Flurry down to 25%. Tidal Focus adds hit. Healing Focus is 3 ranks for 23% pushback resistance. Elemental Alacrity is the renamed Lightning Mastery.
New trainer spells: Call of the Elements (20, drops up to 4 totems from a Totem Bar), Totemic Recall (20, refunds 25% totem mana), Totemic Projection (22, relocates active totems), Call of the Ancestors (30, second set), Call of the Spirits (40, third set). Fire Nova Totem became a cast spell “Fire Nova” (10 sec CD, 30 yd). Weapon imbues last 60 minutes (was 5). Most totems last 5 minutes and reach 30 yards. Base Lightning Bolt is a 2.5 sec cast (was 3.0) with per-rank damage cut. Tranquil Air Totem is listed “Not in Forever”. verified
Imbue levels: Rockbiter 1, Flametongue 10, Frostbrand 20, Windfury 30. verified
Dual Wield: not available. Client skill tables carry a Dual Wield row inherited from SoD-era data, but beta players report it absent from trainers, talents and the skill sheet at cap 20. expcarry: “Do not build your WoW Forever Shaman around Dual Wield yet.” verified
Milestone rows (inferred from row position; wowforeverguides literally says “Not disclosed”): 11 pt = Elemental Focus / Shamanistic Focus / Water Shield. 16 pt = Call of Thunder / Stormstrike (expcarry says “moved to the 15-point row”) / Mana Tide Totem. 21 pt = Earthbound / Spirit Weapons / Nature’s Swiftness. 31 pt = Lava Burst / Rage of the Farseer / Riptide. unverified as Blizzard labels. wowforevertalent’s row numbering is offset by one from foreverchanges, so cite the site when quoting a row.
The three trees
Section titled “The three trees”Elemental
Section titled “Elemental”- Role: ranged DPS.
- Playstyle: Flame Shock into Lava Burst, Lightning Bolt filler, Lightning Overload procs, Clearcasting from Elemental Focus saved for Chain Lightning or Lava Burst.
- Strengths: ranged, Nature damage nobody resists in the early raids, Chain Lightning on packs, brings the same totems as any Shaman.
- Weaknesses: single-target signal “much weaker” than Enhancement (expcarry B; wowsims work-in-progress preset about 444 DPS, “do not copy”). Mana sustain unproven. verified as published
- Verdict: a fine ranged slot in a 10 or 20 that wants Shaman totems in the caster group. No evidence at 60.
Enhancement
Section titled “Enhancement”- Role: melee DPS.
- Playstyle: slow two-hander weaving Stormstrike, Shocks and Maelstrom Lightning Bolts. Windfury Totem and Strength of Earth for the melee group.
- Strengths: expcarry A, wowsims work-in-progress about 663 DPS. Best leveling spec. Rage of the Farseer is a real burst window. verified as published
- Weaknesses: mana is the lingering complaint even with Shamanistic Focus. No Dual Wield. Melee-range uptime.
- Verdict: the melee group’s anchor. Disputes: whether “spellhance” (extra Elemental points) beats pure Enhancement, and whether it tanks (below).
Restoration
Section titled “Restoration”- Role: healer.
- Playstyle: Riptide into Chain Heal, Water Shield plus Mindfulness plus Mana Tide for mana, Nature’s Swiftness for saves.
- Strengths: expcarry A. The best group-stacked healer on paper, with three mana engines.
- Weaknesses: no absorb, no HoT beyond Riptide, must stand with the melee for totem range.
- Verdict: a top-tier raid healer by every fan source. Open question: does Chain Heal consume Riptide’s HoT? classicwowforever: “nothing says Chain Heal uses up the heal over time”. verified
Leveling 1 to 60
Section titled “Leveling 1 to 60”Where beta data stops: only 1 to 20 is beta-tested (cap rising to 30). Everything past 20 is theorycraft and every guide says so.
Spec: Enhancement, unanimous across wowforeverbuilds, expcarry and leprestore. Restoration for dungeon-heavy duos. verified
Talent order 10 to 20 (0/11/0), agreed by all three: verified
| Levels | Talent |
|---|---|
| 10 to 14 | Thundering Strikes 5/5 |
| 15 to 17 | Mental Dexterity 3/3 |
| 18 to 19 | Improved Ghost Wolf 2/2 |
| 20 | Shamanistic Focus 1/1 |
To 30 (0/21/0, expcarry): Elemental Weapons 3/3, Anticipation 1/3, Stormstrike at 25, Flurry 5/5. wowforeverbuilds orders Flurry at 25 and Spirit Weapons at 30 for a Priest-duo build; the fan orders differ. verified as published
Past 30 (leprestore): Maelstrom Weapon 5/5, Rage of the Farseer at 40, then Elemental points (Concussion, Elemental Devastation, Elemental Fury). unverified beyond 20.
Rotation 1 to 20: Rockbiter and Lightning Shield up. Pull with Lightning Bolt. Searing Totem for tough mobs. Flame Shock, then Earth Shock on cooldown or as an interrupt. Auto-attack with a slow two-hander. Fire Nova (12) near your totems for packs. Healing Wave between pulls. Ghost Wolf (20, instant with the talent) to move. verified
25+: Stormstrike, then spend its 20% bonus on Earth Shock or a Maelstrom Lightning Bolt. 30+: Windfury Weapon. Mana is the lingering complaint even with Shamanistic Focus. verified
Tips: set up Call of the Elements sets by 20 (one solo, one dungeon, one PvP). Re-imbue at the start of each dungeon, not each pull, since imbues last an hour. Use Rockbiter solo and Flametongue or Windfury in groups so Spirit Weapons’ Rockbiter threat does not pull aggro off the tank. Healing potions are a First Aid craft now; take First Aid.
Endgame builds
Section titled “Endgame builds”All theorycraft, none checked in beta.
Enhancement 17/34/0
Section titled “Enhancement 17/34/0”- Talent build: Thundering Strikes, Ancestral Knowledge, Mental Dexterity, Elemental Weapons, Shamanistic Focus, Flurry, Stormstrike, Spirit Weapons, Mental Quickness, Improved Stormstrike, Maelstrom Weapon, Rage of the Farseer; Elemental side Concussion 5, Elemental Devastation 3, Elemental Focus, Elemental Fury 5. leprestore and classicwowforever give 19/32/0. verified as published
- Priority: totems via Call of the Elements (Windfury plus Strength of Earth). Stormstrike on cooldown. Maelstrom Lightning Bolt at high stacks. Earth Shock and Flame Shock between. Rage of the Farseer with trinkets.
- Stats: hit, Intellect, Strength and Agility, crit, slow weapon DPS (leprestore puts weapon DPS first). Forever’s hit cap is unpublished; vanilla’s 9% is vanilla baseline.
- Weapon: imbue Windfury Weapon, so a permanent Crusader-type enchant is worth buying.
- Consumables named: Elixir of the Mongoose, Juju Power. Vanilla item names copied by a fan guide. vanilla baseline Forever Alchemy adds Mixology and new melee AP flasks; potion cooldowns and elixir slots are unpublished. See Alchemy.
- Raid fit: the melee group’s Windfury and Strength of Earth anchor in any size. In a 10-man, one Enhancement Shaman covers melee buffs for the whole group; the 20 and 40 want one per melee group. That is vanilla logic applied to Forever’s 30 yd totems. vanilla baseline See Raids overview.
Elemental 31/10/10
Section titled “Elemental 31/10/10”- Talent build: 31/10/10 per wowforeverbuilds. Our research captured the split and the rotation, not the point-by-point list; the rotation depends on Elemental Focus (Clearcasting), Lava Burst, Lightning Overload and Elemental Fury, with the remaining 20 points in Enhancement and Restoration filler. verified as published (split and rotation only)
- Priority: Flame Shock. Lava Burst when up. Lightning Bolt filler. Chain Lightning on packs. Save Clearcasting for Chain Lightning or Lava Burst.
- Stats: hit to cap, spell and Nature damage, crit (Elemental Fury), Intellect, mp5 (mana per 5 seconds).
- Consumables named: Greater Arcane Elixir, Flask of Supreme Power, Brilliant Wizard Oil. vanilla baseline
- Raid fit: a ranged Shaman that carries totems to the caster group. Fine in the 10 and 20; in the 40, Enhancement covers the melee buffs more efficiently.
Restoration 0/8/43
Section titled “Restoration 0/8/43”- Talent build: 0/8/43 per wowforeverbuilds; leprestore agrees. Our research captured the split and the priority, not the point-by-point list; the priority depends on Water Shield, Mindfulness, Mana Tide Totem, Nature’s Swiftness and Riptide, with 8 points in Enhancement. verified as published (split and priority only)
- Priority: Riptide the most damaged target. Chain Heal through it. Healing Wave and Lesser Healing Wave on tanks. Keep Water Shield up. Nature’s Swiftness for saves. Mana Tide on demand.
- Stats: healing power (it also grants one third as +damage), mp5, Intellect, crit (Water Shield), Spirit.
- Positioning: stand with the melee for totem range.
- Raid fit: a stacked-group healer in all three raid sizes. In a 10-man with 3 healers, pair with a Priest on the tank.
Sets: wowforeverbuilds names a “Spiritcaller” Tier 1 set and “The Five Thunders” pre-raid set. Five Thunders is the vanilla dungeon set. vanilla baseline “Spiritcaller” appears nowhere else and is unverified, possibly vapor.
PvP notes
Section titled “PvP notes”No beta battleground data exists at cap 20 and level-60 PvP is untestable. Forever runs Warsong Gulch, Arathi Basin, Alterac Valley and the new 15v15 Darkspear Islands with a 14-rank honor track that resets each patch cycle. verified
- Toolkit: Purge, Earth Shock interrupt, Frost Shock, Grounding, Tremor and Earthbind totems, Earthbound roots (talent), self-heals. expcarry rates Shaman PvP B.
- Elemental: Reverberation shocks, Eye of the Storm, Earthbound, Lightning Overload, Lava Burst. verified as published
- Enhancement: Stormstrike into shocks, Windfury, Flurry, Maelstrom heals and bolts. verified as published
- Restoration 0/15/36: Healing Focus, Riptide, Nature’s Swiftness, Water Shield, Grounding and Earthbind. verified as published
- Racials: Orc Hardiness, Troll Berserking, Tauren War Stomp, Dwarf Stoneform (now a bleed and poison purge with damage reduction, a strong anti-Rogue button on the Alliance side).
Race choice
Section titled “Race choice”Shaman = Dwarf (new), Orc, Tauren, Troll, Windshaper Skyborne. High Order Skyborne cannot be Shaman. verified Racial text is verified across Method, zockify and classicwow.gg; numbers can be tuned. Dwarf Gun Specialization and Frost Resistance were removed.
Alliance
| Race | Racials | Take |
|---|---|---|
| Dwarf (only option, new) | Stoneform (removes bleed, poison, disease, 10% less physical damage 8 sec, 3 min CD); Find Treasure; Mace Specialization +1% crit; Big Game Hunter +5% vs Beasts | The only Alliance Shaman. Mace crit suits any spec (many Shaman weapons are maces). Stoneform is a real defensive |
Horde
| Race | Racials | Take |
|---|---|---|
| Orc | Blood Fury +10% AP and SP 15 sec, no healing penalty (2 min CD); Shatter Curse (removes curses, 15% less magic damage 8 sec); Axe Specialization +1% crit; Hardiness (stun duration minus 20%) | Best Enhancement pick. Also fine Elemental now that Blood Fury adds SP |
| Troll | Berserking +10% attack and cast speed 10 sec (3 min CD, no health condition); Rapid Regeneration (50% HP over 6 sec, cancelled by action); Beast Slaying; Regeneration (10% health regen continues in combat) | Strong Elemental and Restoration. Competitive Enhancement |
| Tauren | War Stomp (2 sec stun, up to 5 targets in 8 yd); Cultivation (grow herbs without Herbalism); Plainsrunning (+1% speed per 5 sec moving, max 30%); Endurance +5% health and +1% hit | Good all-rounder. The +1% hit is a small but real DPS stat |
| Windshaper Skyborne (paid) | Walk on Air (glide 10 sec); Skysight +10% run speed 30 sec; Wind Blessed +1% haste; Elemental Insight +5% vs Elementals | Modest. The only Skyborne Shaman option. See Editions |
Professions for this class
Section titled “Professions for this class”No source claims a proven best pair; classicwowforever says so outright. Common suggestions: verified
- Herbalism + Alchemy for mana consumables. The Alchemy “Mana Well” camp object restores mana between pulls.
- Skinning + Leatherworking for mail at 40 and self-supply.
- Mining + Engineering for PvP and trinkets.
- Mining + Blacksmithing for two-handers (leprestore).
- First Aid holds healing potions in Forever.
Pre-raid gear philosophy
Section titled “Pre-raid gear philosophy”No verified Forever pre-raid BiS list exists. Principles that follow from confirmed systems:
- Unified hit and crit make Intellect-plus-hit mail good for every spec. Mental Dexterity and Mental Quickness turn Intellect into AP and spell power. verified
- +healing gives one third as +damage. verified
- Slow two-hander for Enhancement (Windfury and Stormstrike).
- The Five Thunders is the obvious dungeon target if it survives unchanged. vanilla baseline
- Weapon skill still exists but items give less of it. Do not chase it. verified
- Read the guild loot rules before the first raid; Intellect mail and slow two-handers are both contested slots.
Common mistakes and pro tips
Section titled “Common mistakes and pro tips”Mistakes (expcarry’s list, agreed): verified
- Copying Classic, TBC, Wrath or SoD builds.
- Planning around Dual Wield.
- Treating sim numbers as balance.
- Overspending mana every pull.
- Assuming SoD tank mechanics.
Tips:
- Set up Call of the Elements sets by 20: one PvE, one PvP, one dungeon.
- Totemic Recall before moving.
- 60-minute imbues mean re-imbue at the start of each dungeon, not each pull.
- Rockbiter solo; Flametongue or Windfury in groups so you do not pull threat (Spirit Weapons makes Rockbiter a threat imbue).
- Earth Shock is your interrupt.
- Stormstrike, then the buffed Earth Shock or Maelstrom bolt.
- Restoration: Riptide first, then Chain Heal through that target for the +25%.
- Lava Burst is not a guaranteed crit in Forever; it gets +20% with your Flame Shock on the target. verified
- New spell ranks do not replace old ones on your bars; cast-by-name macros use the highest rank. verified
Addons and macros under the Forever API
Section titled “Addons and macros under the Forever API”Forever uses the retail (Midnight) addon API. See Addons that work.
- Built in: swing timer (Options, Advanced Options, main, off and ranged elements), cooldown manager (unfinished, varies by class), damage meter. Edit Mode handles a totem bar slot. verified
- Old Shaman addons are dead. TotemTimers on CurseForge is retail-only and last updated December 2020. verified No Forever-flavored totem addon was found.
- The community “Forever Classmate” bar tracks totem slot timers, weapon imbues and Maelstrom cues within the secret-value limits. verified
- Secret values block addon threat and health math, so there is no ThreatClassic-style meter for the tank experiment.
- Macros (untested on this client): vanilla baseline
/cast Call of the Elements#showtooltip Purge/cast [@mouseover,harm,nodead] Purge; Purge/castsequence reset=combat Flame Shock, Earth ShockStandard conditionals (@mouseover, harm, nodead, mod:) work in beta. verified Whether /castsequence survives the secure restrictions is unverified.
