Mage

The Mage is the least reworked of the Forever caster classes, which is good news if you played one in 2005: portals, food, Polymorph and ranged burst are all still here. What Blizzard added is three later-expansion mechanics (Arcane Blast stacking, Hot Streak, Ice Lance with Fingers of Frost) and a Mage-only scroll research system nobody has fully explored. Frost is the leveling and PvP consensus, Fire sims highest for raids, and Arcane is a mana puzzle on paper. Everything past level 30 on this page is theorycraft, because that is where the beta stops.

You want to play a Mage in Forever if you like control, want a guaranteed raid seat in the 10 and 20 for Arcane Brilliance, Polymorph, Counterspell and food, and enjoy a class where the rotation is about managing procs and windows rather than a fixed sequence. The cross-class changes help: one unified hit stat and one crit stat mean racials like Tauren Endurance or Night Elf Elune’s Light no longer skip casters (neither race is a Mage, but the same logic makes Troll Berserking and Gnome Eureka! straightforward). Periodic damage crits now, so Ignite scales with your crit. Arcane Intellect lasts an hour. Mage Armor gives 50% mana regen while casting (was 30%). verified

The downside is that Forever lowered base spell damage at the same rank across the board. Fireball rank 12 does 425 to 541 (was 596 to 760 in Classic). Guides read this as “scaling moved onto gear,” which is an inference, not a Blizzard statement. Do not plan around Classic tooltips. verified on the numbers, unverified on the interpretation.

Counts at beta build 69977: 5 new talents, roughly 34 to 36 changed, 54 total. verified

Talent Tree What it does
Arcane Blast Arcane Each cast buffs the damage of all your other spells by 10% and raises Arcane Blast’s own mana cost by 175%. Stacks to 4, lasts 8 sec or until any other damage spell is cast. Note the wording: the stacks do not buff Arcane Blast itself
Missile Barrage Arcane Arcane Blast 40%, and Fireball, Frostbolt, Frostfire Bolt 20% chance to make your next Arcane Missiles 50% shorter, free, and fire a missile every 0.5 sec demo tooltip, beta confirms “50% shorter, free”
Hot Streak Fire (requires Pyroblast) Non-periodic crits with Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Fire Blast and Scorch grant Hot Streak for 15 sec; each stack cuts Pyroblast cast time by 25%, up to 3 stacks
Ice Lance Frost Instant, 45 mana demo, “Deals 300% increased damage to Frozen targets”
Fingers of Frost Frost (requires Ice Lance) Chill effects have a 15% chance to make your next 1 (rank 1) or 2 (rank 2) casts treat the target as Frozen, 15 sec

All five verified from foreverchanges.pro and classicwow.gg unless tagged.

  • Arcane Focus and Elemental Precision give +1% hit per rank (Elemental Precision went to 5 ranks) instead of resist reduction. changed in Forever
  • Improved Counterspell is a guaranteed 2 sec silence (was a 50% chance of 4 sec).
  • Arcane Meditation: 17% of regen continues while casting (was 5%). Arcane Mind: +2% Intellect and +20% Arcane crit damage per rank.
  • Shatter has 3 ranks, +17% crit vs Frozen at max. One classicwow.gg snippet says “up to 50% at Rank 3”; treat 17% as the datamined number and 50% as a possible error.
  • Winter’s Chill stacks once and only buffs your own Ice Lance and Frostbolt crit. It is no longer a raid debuff.
  • Improved Scorch is 3% Fire vulnerability per stack to 5, but “all Fire damage you deal.” Personal, not shared.
  • Combustion lasts until 4 non-periodic Fire crits (was 3).
  • Improved Blizzard slows 40% for 1.5 sec (Classic was 65%; expcarry quotes the Classic number).
  • Ice Block moved up to the 15-point row, Cold Snap down to the 20-point row.
  • Renames: Improved Arcane Explosion is Arcane Impact (+2% Arcane crit per rank), Improved Arcane Missiles is Improved Channeling, Improved Fire Blast is Wake of Fire (Fire Blast CD minus 1 sec, kills give the next Fire Blast +25% crit), Improved Mana Shield is Arcane Shielding, Incinerate is Incineration (also buffs Ice Lance and Arcane Blast crit), Magic Attunement is Arcane Geometry (+3 yd Arcane range). zockify lists these as removed, foreverchanges as renamed. Same thing.

All verified from foreverchanges.pro at build 69977.

  • Comprehend Scroll and Study at level 6: a Mage-only research system. You find “untranslated” scrolls with odd names (CWAL at 1 Comprehension, VOCE WELL at 15, THAW WORDS at 50, DOST OREM at 175) and decipher them once your Comprehension skill is high enough. Study “performs spell research, resulting in a bundle of scrolls” and needs a library. Rewards are undocumented. ForeverWisp says outright they “have not tested scroll outcomes or a Comprehension levelling route.” Do not trust Season of Discovery rune guides here. verified on the mechanic, unverified on rewards.
  • Frostfire Bolt at 40: both Fire and Frost, 40% slow, referenced by four talents. Whether it is available at launch is “unconfirmed” per wowforeverbuilds’ T1 notes. unverified
  • Teleport: Dalaran at 50. Detect Magic is gone. Arcane Brilliance is raid-wide. verified
  • Role: ranged DPS with the best control of your own burst.
  • Playstyle: stack Arcane Blast to 4, cash in with Missile Barrage procs, burst with Arcane Power and Presence of Mind, then drop to cheap Fireballs to recover mana.
  • Strengths: only spec whose stacks buff other schools (a 4-stack Presence of Mind Pyroblast is the payoff); Improved Counterspell’s guaranteed silence; Arcane Meditation regen.
  • Weaknesses: mana. Arcane Blast costs +175% per stack and Arcane Power adds 30% on top. No AoE beyond Arcane Explosion. No published leveling guide at all.
  • Verdict: expcarry calls it “one of the best DPS specs” on paper; MythicSim’s 09-24 run has it at 514, 14th of 19 specs. The dispute is whether the mana loop holds on a long fight. Nobody knows. unverified
  • Role: ranged DPS, highest Mage sim.
  • Playstyle: Fireball filler, Scorch to keep your own 5-stack vulnerability, Pyroblast at 3 Hot Streak stacks, Combustion windows.
  • Strengths: 591 DPS on the 09-24 MythicSim run (4th overall); Ignite at 40% of crit damage and periodic damage crits; Blast Wave AoE; Impact stuns.
  • Weaknesses: Fire-immune bosses (a Molten Core-style problem in vanilla; Forever’s raids are unknown vanilla baseline); threat spikes on crit streaks.
  • Verdict: consensus strongest Mage raid spec by sim. Nobody has raided with it. The sim engine’s own README says talents are incomplete and racials unverified.
  • Role: ranged DPS plus control.
  • Playstyle: Frostbolt filler; Ice Lance only on Frozen targets or Fingers of Frost charges; Winter’s Chill self-buff; Ice Barrier.
  • Strengths: best leveling spec by consensus; best PvP toolkit (Ice Block, Frost Nova, Blink, Improved Counterspell); Blizzard AoE grinding from 22.
  • Weaknesses: lowest raid ceiling of the three by sim (512); Winter’s Chill no longer helps other Mages.
  • Verdict: level it, PvP with it. Raid Frost is “control-focused, lower ceiling” per expcarry.

Consensus is Frost. wowforeverbuilds, expcarry, the guild catalog and the beta class report all agree. The class report ranks Mage third for leveling and “quietly strong,” but admits “we found no beta-tested Mage build yet.” Only levels 1 to 20 (now 30) are beta-tested by anyone. Everything past 30 below is theorycraft. verified

Level 20 (11 points): Improved Frostbolt 5/5 (10 to 14), Permafrost 3/3 (15 to 17), Ice Shards 2/5 (18 to 19), Ice Lance (20). Levels 21 to 30: Frost Channeling 3/3, Piercing Ice 1/3, Ice Block, Shatter 3/3, Piercing Ice 2/3, Cold Snap. verified

Full 10 to 60 Frost single-target order (wowforeverbuilds, theorycraft past 30)

Section titled “Full 10 to 60 Frost single-target order (wowforeverbuilds, theorycraft past 30)”
Levels Talent
10 to 14 Improved Frostbolt 5/5
15 to 17 Frostbite 3/3
18 to 22 Ice Shards 5/5
23 to 24 Improved Frost Nova 2/2
25 Ice Lance
26 to 28 Piercing Ice 3/3
29 to 33 Shatter (guide says 5/5; datamine says 3 ranks, so expect 3 here and 2 elsewhere)
34 Ice Block
35 Cold Snap
36 to 37 Fingers of Frost 2/2
38 to 41 Frost Channeling 3/3
40 Ice Barrier (guide places it at 40)
42 to 46 Winter’s Chill 5/5
47 to 48 Arctic Reach 2/2
49 to 56 Elemental Precision 5/5
52 to 54 Permafrost 3/3
57 to 60 Frost Warding 2/2, Improved Cone of Cold 2/3
  • 10 to 24: Frostbolt from max range, re-cast as the mob walks in, wand to finish.
  • 25 to 35: Frostbolt, Frost Nova when it reaches you, Ice Lance on the frozen target for the Shatter crit, step back.
  • 36+: Fingers of Frost procs let you Ice Lance without a Nova. “Slowed is not the same as Frozen”: Ice Lance on a merely chilled target is a wasted global. verified
  • Fire 10 to 40: Improved Fireball and Ignite first, Pyroblast with Hot Streak, Impact stuns, Blast Wave at 30, Combustion at 40. verified
  • Frost AoE from 22: Improved Blizzard at 22, then Permafrost and Arctic Reach. Some AoE grinders skip Frostbite because its random freezes “can split a moving pack and make Blizzard positioning less predictable.”
  • Arcane: no published leveling guide exists.

Conjure your own food and water every few levels. Undead: Cannibalize now restores 7% health and 7% mana per 2 sec for 10 sec, a free drink between pulls. See Leveling for dungeon routes.

All three builds are theorycraft. wowforeverbuilds says so in each guide (“untested design,” “not yet verified in beta testing”). The beta cap is 30. Treat these as a starting point to argue about on 11-04, not a plan. unverified

Talents. Arcane: Wand Specialization 2, Arcane Focus 3, Arcane Subtlety 2, Arcane Concentration 5. Fire: Incineration 3, Improved Fireball 5, Ignite 5, Flame Throwing 2, Burning Soul 2, Pyroblast, Improved Scorch 3, Hot Streak, Master of Elements 3, Critical Mass 3, Fire Power 5, Combustion. Frost: Elemental Precision 5.

Priority. Keep your own Improved Scorch at 5 stacks. Fireball filler. Pyroblast at 3 Hot Streak stacks. Fire Blast while moving. Burst window: Eureka! (Gnome), then Combustion, then Fireballs into Hot Streak Pyroblasts.

Stats. Spell hit, then Fire or general spell damage, then crit, then Intellect.

T1 Manaflare Regalia (datamined; slots and stats unknown): 2pc +1% hit, 3pc Counterspell CD minus 5 sec, 4pc up to 21 spell damage vs Elementals, 5pc Frostfire Bolt procs Missile Barrage and Fingers of Frost more often plus bonus crit during Combustion.

Consumables. Elixir of Greater Firepower, Greater Arcane Elixir, Brilliant Wizard Oil, Major Mana Potion, Demonic or Dark Runes during Combustion, Limited Invulnerability Potion. vanilla baseline names; whether all exist in Forever is unconfirmed.

Raid fit. 10 and 20: one Mage covers Arcane Brilliance, Polymorph, Counterspell, Remove Lesser Curse and food. 40: the guild’s target composition is 26 DPS, so multiple Mages are fine, but the Classic-era reason to stack them (shared Winter’s Chill and Improved Scorch) is gone. One Fire Mage no longer buffs the others.

Talents. Arcane: Improved Channeling 5, Arcane Subtlety 2, Magic Absorption 1, Arcane Concentration 5, Arcane Impact 2, Missile Barrage. Frost: Improved Frostbolt 5, Elemental Precision 5, Ice Shards 5, Piercing Ice 3, Frost Channeling 2, Ice Lance, Shatter (guide says 5, datamine says 3), Cold Snap, Fingers of Frost 2, Winter’s Chill 5, Ice Barrier.

Priority. Frostbolt filler (each cast can stack Winter’s Chill, proc Fingers of Frost, Missile Barrage or Clearcasting). Ice Lance on Fingers of Frost. Free Arcane Missiles on Missile Barrage. Ice Barrier when raid damage is incoming. Mana Gem, then Evocation below a third mana.

Stats. Hit, Frost or general damage, crit (Ice Shards plus Shatter), Intellect and regen, Stamina. The guide’s own caveat: “whether the Arcane dip justifies its points if Missile Barrage damage underperforms with Frost gear.”

Consumables. Greater Arcane Elixir, Elixir of Frost Power, Brilliant Wizard Oil, Major Mana Potion, runes, Mageblood Potion, Nightfin Soup. vanilla baseline

Raid fit. Same utility as Fire with Ice Block and Ice Barrier for survivability. Lower ceiling by sim. A fine second Mage in a 20 or 40.

Talents. Arcane: Arcane Focus 5, Improved Channeling 5, Arcane Subtlety 2, Arcane Concentration 5, Arcane Blast, Arcane Meditation 3, Missile Barrage, Presence of Mind, Arcane Mind 5, Arcane Instability 3, Arcane Power. Fire: Incineration 3, Improved Fireball 5, Ignite 5, Flame Throwing 1, Burning Soul 2, Master of Elements 3.

Cycle. Build Arcane Blast to 4 stacks. Free Arcane Missiles on Missile Barrage procs. Switch to cheap Fireballs when mana drops. Arcane Power at full stacks with Presence of Mind. wowtbc.gg adds Presence of Mind plus Pyroblast at 4 stacks as the burst finisher (the stacks buff other schools, so a PoM Pyroblast gets +40%). verified

Stats. Hit until Arcane Blast stops missing, then Intellect (Arcane Mind doubles its value and mana costs climb), then spell damage, then crit. Arcane inverts the usual damage-before-Intellect order.

Consumables. Mana-heavy: Major Mana Potion, runes, Mageblood, Greater Arcane Elixir. vanilla baseline

Raid fit. Brings the same utility plus a guaranteed 2 sec silence on Counterspell. Whether the mana loop survives a 5 minute boss fight is the open question.

See Raids overview for the 10/20/40 targets and Loot rules for how caster gear is distributed.

  • wowforeverbuilds and boostroom both rank Mage as the #1 PvP class on paper: Polymorph, Frost Nova, Blink, Ice Block, Improved Counterspell’s guaranteed silence. verified wowforeverbuilds, unverified boostroom.
  • Published builds (theorycraft): Frost 20/0/31 (Ice Barrier, Improved Counterspell, Fingers of Frost); Fire 0/31/20 (Impact stuns, Blast Wave, Hot Streak Pyroblasts, Frost half for Ice Block and Shatter); Arcane 31/0/20 (Presence of Mind, Arcane Power, Improved Counterspell).
  • Launch battleground: Darkspear Islands, 15v15, control points plus flag captures. Whether WSG, AB or AV return is unannounced. Honor is a “14-rank track each patch cycle” per a Kotaku interview relayed by Wowhead. No diminishing-returns statement from Blizzard. unverified
  • Undead Will of the Forsaken no longer grants immunity after the break. Gnome Escape Artist gives 3 sec immunity to movement impairment. Both change Mage vs Warlock and Mage vs Rogue. verified from the Deep Dive slide via talentsforever.
  • Remove Lesser Curse strips Banes too, which matters against Warlocks.

Mage races: Alliance Human, Gnome, High Order Skyborne. Horde Undead, Troll, Orc (new combo). Skyborne is a paid unlock. Racial text is from the talentsforever export, read from the demo and Deep Dive slides; numbers may lag the beta. The resistance racials (Gnome Arcane resist, Undead Shadow resist) are gone. verified

Race Racials (Forever) Mage verdict
Gnome Eureka!: next 3 damaging abilities cost 50% less mana and deal 10% more damage, 2 min CD. Expansive Mind +5% mana. Escape Artist with 3 sec immunity Consensus pick for all three specs. wow4evernews, leprestore and wowforeverbuilds all write Eureka! into their raid rotations
Human Will to Survive (stun break, 3 min), Perception, Sword Specialization +2% spell and ability crit while wielding a sword, +5% Spirit PvP stun break. The sword crit is real if you hold a sword
High Order Skyborne Wind Blessed +1% haste, Read Ley Line +100% health and mana regen (15 sec, or 15 min near a ley line), Walk on Air glide, +5% vs Elementals Fine. 1% haste is small. Paid
Race Racials (Forever) Mage verdict
Troll Berserking +10% cast speed for 10 sec, 3 min CD, no longer needs low health. Rapid Regeneration. Beast Slaying +5% Throughput pick
Orc (new) Blood Fury +10% Attack Power and Spell Power for 15 sec, 2 min CD, no healing penalty. Shatter Curse (removes Curses and Banes, 15% magic damage reduction 8 sec). Hardiness stun duration minus 20%. Axe Specialization (Mages cannot equip axes vanilla baseline) Strong. Blood Fury on a 2 min CD is a real caster cooldown now
Undead Will of the Forsaken (break only, no immunity). Cannibalize now restores 7% health and 7% mana per 2 sec for 10 sec. Touch of the Grave 5% drain proc Leveling sustain and a PvP fear break

Blood Fury losing its healing penalty and Berserking losing the health condition: verified from wowclassicforever.info.

  • Tailoring + Enchanting: consensus raid pairing (wowforeverbuilds, expcarry, leprestore). Tailoring for cloth, Enchanting for your own wand and gear enchants. See Tailoring and Enchanting.
  • Engineering + Mining: PvP pairing on every guide.
  • Herbalism + Alchemy: mana potions and elixirs for the Arcane mana loop. See Alchemy.
  • First Aid: not optional. Healing potions moved to First Aid in Forever. verified
  • Comprehension is not a profession. It is a class skill (Wowhead skill 3012) that levels by deciphering scrolls. unverified by fetch.
  • Camping (new profession sub-system, campfire objects, Blueprints from dungeon bosses) applies to everyone.

No Forever pre-raid BiS list exists anywhere loadable. The “BiS” pages on wowforever.be and woweternity are data-pending placeholders. The nine new dungeons have no published loot tables. What holds regardless:

  1. Spell hit first. Every raid guide puts it at the top and every T1 set gives +1% hit at 2 pieces, which tells you Blizzard expects hit to be scarce. The Classic raid hit cap was 16% against a level 63 boss vanilla baseline; leprestore repeats 16% for Forever unverified.
  2. Spell damage, then crit, then Intellect. Arcane inverts Intellect and damage.
  3. Wands matter into the 20s and 30s. Wand damage scales with Spell Power per leprestore unverified, and Wand Specialization at 2/2 is 25%.
  4. Expect +spell damage items to be relatively more valuable than in Classic because base damage at the same rank is lower. That is an inference from foreverchanges’ numbers, not a confirmed design note.
  • Ice Lance on a slowed target does base damage. Only Frozen (Frost Nova, Frostbite, Improved Blizzard freeze) or a Fingers of Frost charge gives the 300%. verified
  • Hot Streak is a cast-time reduction, not an instant. Three stacks is 75% off a 6 sec Pyroblast (demo cast time), still a cast.
  • Arcane Blast stacks buff everything except Arcane Blast. A 4-stack Presence of Mind Pyroblast is the payoff.
  • Frostbite’s random freezes can split a moving pack. AoE grinders may skip it.
  • Mote of Magic is an Enchanting reagent, not the Comprehension currency.
  • Winter’s Chill and Improved Scorch are personal. Do not assign “the Scorch mage” like it is 2005.
  • Conjure your own food and water. Undead: Cannibalize between pulls.
  • Improved Blizzard is a 40% slow, not 65%. Guides quoting 65% are reading the Classic tooltip.

Forever “shares Mainline WoW’s UI architecture, including the vast majority of APIs available in 12.1.5.” Midnight’s addon disarmament applies in full and stays synced with retail. WeakAuras and Hekili are dead. UnitHealth returns a secret value. Blizzard ships a built-in damage meter and cooldown manager. See Addons that work. verified

Mage-specific consequences:

  • Proc tracking (Fingers of Frost, Missile Barrage, Hot Streak, Clearcasting): rely on Blizzard’s default spell-activation overlay (the glowing button) and the built-in cooldown manager. No third-party proc addon is Forever-flagged yet.
  • Damage meters: Details! is not Forever-flagged as of 09-19. Use the built-in meter.
  • Health-percentage logic in macros or addons (for example “Fire Blast below 20%”) is impossible under secret values. Read the default frames with your eyes.
  • Nameplates: Platynator is “designed for Midnight and Forever.” Boss mods: DBM and BigWigs carry Forever flavors.

Macro syntax is retail’s. @mouseover, @focus, [harm] and [nodead] all work. Standard patterns, unverified in Forever specifically:

#showtooltip Polymorph
/cast [@focus,harm,nodead] Polymorph; Polymorph
#showtooltip Counterspell
/cast [@mouseover,harm,nodead] Counterspell; Counterspell
#showtooltip Ice Block
/stopcasting
/cancelaura Ice Block
/cast Ice Block
